Aux guerres totales, qui durèrent de 2010 à 2060 de l'Ere chrétienne, a survécu une population de trois millions d'humains. Les engins ondiniques utilisés par les factions religieuses et idéologiques responsables du conflit ont laissé des traces indélébiles : les Zones interdites, couvrant un tiers de la surface habitable. Tout objet ou être vivant qui y pénètre disparaît sans laisser de trace et leurs abords voient d'étranges phénomènes : orages bleuâtres, orages soudains et inexplicables. En 8 de notre Nouvelle Histoire, un être énorme apparut près de la Zone 4. On a décelé dans ses os un métal totalement inconnu.

Michel Demuth (1939-2006) est l'une des figures majeures de la SF française. En qualité d'écrivain, bien sûr — en témoigne la présente sélection — , mais aussi en tant que traducteur (on lui doit en français le Dune de Frank Herbert, Elric le Nécromancien de Michael Moorcock, ou bien encore 2001 : l'odyssée de l'espace, d'Arthur C. Clarke). Sans oublier son imposante activité d'éditeur — il dirigea la revue Galaxie, la collection « Galaxie-bis », ou encore le mythique « Club du Livre d'Anticipation ».
