"This book tells the scientific story of the small merchantman Yenikapı 12, which has a special place in the Istanbul University Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project. The small cargo vessel called Yenikapı 12 was near the piers on the eastern part of the Theodosian Harbor during the early 9th century. This coastal sailing vessel is a single-masted, Latin-sail rig, steered with quarter-rudders and carries approximately 250 amphoras in its hold. Its low-draught and the flat-floored hull has the ability to easily enter shallow harbors and bays, beaching, and even navigate rivers. Furthermore, At the same time, it has been designed in a way that both increases the load capacity and facilitates maneuvering and navigational capability. However, it was submerged by a sudden summer storm in the Sea of Marmara and was immediately covered by the back precipitation of sand lifted from the seafloor."
